Article by Priyangshu Choudhury(Dibrugarh University)

At the ending of the year 2019 we have visualized a pandemic, Risk to human lives. Many part of the world are affected by the virus. COVID 19 (Corona Virus disease 2019). Covid19 is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was first identified in the Wuhan city of china. Till 22 June 2020 more than 8.91 million cases have been reported in allover 188 countries and territories and more than 466000 deaths. However the recovery rate is quite up to the ratio, about 4.4 million people have been recovered.

The virus is highly infectious and spread rapidly among peoples with close contact. The most dangerous it can spread is through droplets, When a patient cough or sneeze or even talk the droplets containing the virus particles spread all over and anybody passing through that area may get contaminated by the particles. But the same droplets hold fewer chances of infections if the droplets fall on the ground. Although the virus is not capable of transmitting through air but the droplets while having a speech can remain in the air for almost 10 minutes. The virus is more contagious during the first three days of infection. But the worst part is that the carrying agent may not know about presence of virus in his/her body. The symptoms may start from the very fast day or may not. Sputum and saliva contain large amount of virus. Although COVID 19 is not spread through the sexual contact since it is not a sexually transmitted disease rather kissing, intimate contact and facial oral routes are suspected to transmit virus. Mostly seen, that the symptoms are not so visible from the very fast day. The standard Method of diagnosing is the Real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). The samples are taken from the nasopharyngeal swab or sputum swab gives us the same result. Sometimes the chest CT diagnosing will be helpful in areas having high suspicion of infection.

Signs and Symptoms:-

Common symptoms include fever- case study shows that fever is not so common in people in their earlier days, only 44% of people had fever when they presented to the hospitals, while 89% showed fever during their hospitalization. At the same time the lack of fever cannot prove the person disease free.

There are other symptoms too

· Cough

· Loss of appetite

· Fatigue

· Suffocation or shortness of breath

· Sputum production

· Muscle and joint pain

· Nausea

· Vomiting

· Diarrhea

Symptoms those are not so common -

· Sneezing, Running nose, sore throat and skin lesions

Initially there are some cases in china where chest tightness is seen and the loss of smell was seen in first few cases.

Awareness and Prevention:-

We all have heard about the proverb that “Prevention is better than cure”. And we have to abide by the rules developed by the WHO (World Health Organization). Although is now at a state of being cured bit there is no surety about it. It completely depends upon the immunity system of the person. The vaccines are yet not discovered. They are under the process of being discovered, so it will be beneficial to us if we follow the rules and prevent the spread of the disease. Wearing face mask prevents the droplets while having a speech or if someone sneezes, it could come out to the atmosphere and could infect the others. Washing our hands after a period of interval is mandatory because the soap molecules do break the protective layers of the virus.

People may find it silly that a simple face mask or the simple soap can prevent you from a deadly corona virus. But it’s true, a simple face mask and a normal soap can prevent us from COVID 19.

Corona Virus is a serious issue. We should not take it casually. The proper maintenance of social distancing is very necessary .
